Saturday’s auction was a success! We held a silent auction at the studio for Lucy & The Gwendolyn Strong Foundation. Lucy is a beautiful little girl with SMA. Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a motor-neuron disease. The motor neurons affect the voluntary muscles that are used for activities such as crawling, walking, head and neck control, and swallowing. It is a relatively common, but publicly little-known disorder: approximately 1 in 6000 babies born are affected, and about 1 in 40 people are genetic carriers. It is a degenerative disease, and the number 1 genetic killer in babies under 2 years old.
Barb and Noah Zahn, of Fond du Lac, are the parents of Lucy, type 1 SMA, which is supposed to mean she will most probably live to be 2. She cannot move her legs unless suspended or in water. She cannot support her own head or sit up on her own, and never will. She uses a machine to cough for her, because she cannot do it on her own. She also needs a machine to help her breathe when she sleeps, and may eventually need it when she’s awake. Lucy cannot eat anything by mouth because she cannot swallow properly and will aspirate it into her lungs. A simple respiratory illness is life threatening for Lucy. Despite all this she is still playful and happy, loves being read to and taking baths, singing to her stuffed animals and playing with her toys, with help from Barb and Noah.
Lucy’s family and friends are always doing amazing things to raise money to fight for a cure. This weekends event was just another way they are fighting for a great cause. We had alot of wonderful people donate items. A great big thanks to all who donated: Margo Rouge, Dainty Daisies, Ben Cornwell, Beata Lieders, Beth Cornwell, Barb Zahn, Eliana Briones, Don Stolley, Marjorie Trew-Munson, and many others. We had alot of great people donate and help out with food, beverages and setup. Thank you to all who participated. Lucy & Mom had a painting being auctioned off on Ebay which made over $200. Lucy’s painting beat moms ha ha go Lucy! Overall the auction brought in a good chunk of change. We had alot of fun! We even had some little helpers, Pip & Linus. They colored some pictures and everyone got one. We also got sticka-fied with Olivia stickers! Check out some of the beautiful work, food and fun that was had.
Stay tuned for future events for Lucy. We will be holding another art auction later in the year as well as a rummage sale to raise money for the cure!
